Pharmaceutical Chemistry

Naoki SAITO, Ph.D., Professor
Masashi YOKOYA, M.D., Research Associate

We are conducting basic scientific research mainly on the organic compound chemistry of biologically-active natural products produced by microorganisms and marine organisms, in the quest for new medicinal drugs. Our current research activities have three main parts: 1) Total synthesis of anti-tumor isoquinoline alkaloids; 2) Search for a new source of potential drugs from the sea;
3) Development and evaluation of new concepts in synthetic methods, and application to the preparation of biologically active compounds. We consider natural sources existing in partner countries to be one of the important factors in the production of medicine. Thus, we focus on basic academic research which is necessary for the development of the pharmaceutical and medical products industry in partner countries. We will design a functional molecule and create a process for retrieving a large supply of targets based on a bioprospecting strategy. Our group belongs to the Center for Drug Discovery at Meiji Pharmaceutical University, and part of our research during 2006-2008 was supported by the JSPS International Scientific Platform Program.
